Pulmonary Medicine is a special area of
medicine that deals specifically with the lungs. Doctors trained in this
branch of medicine (pulmonologists) have advanced knowledge of lung physiology
and pathophysiology (how the lung normally work and how the lung responds
to different diseases). Maui

knowledge of physiology, life
sustaining medications and life supporting mechanical devices which are
essential in the care of many patients in intensive care units. Maui Chest
Medicine provides a spectrum of Critical Care medical services including
critical care consultations, invasive Hemodynamics management, tracheal
intubations, respirator management, tracheostomy management and assistance
with the management of sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, acute
respiratory failure, shock syndromes, acute cardiac syndromes, acute neurologic
syndromes, acute hepatic and gastrointestinal syndromes and acute life-threatening
electrolyte and endocrine disorders.
Sleep Medicine is a special area of medicine
which deals with sleep disorders or disorders that disrupt sleep. Doctors
trained in this branch of medicine (Sleep Specialists) have advanced knowledge
of the central nervous and endocrine systems particularly as they impact
the circadian rhythm, sleep and the cardiopulmonary system. Maui Chest
Medicine provides comprehensive physiologic testing during sleep (Polysomnography)
in patients with disturbed sleep. A sleep clinic is available to provide
on-going assistance to patient with documented sleep apnea syndromes,
leg movement disorders, narcolepsy, REM-related behavioral disorders and
idiopathic insomnia.
